Our story: the invention of a new extraction technology

Why we do it

In the last century mankind has started evolving in an unhealthy direction and there are many signals that it is because we are detached from our natural environment. There is increasing scientific evidence that natural ingredients are healthier than their synthetic alternatives. This increasing amount of evidence is fueling consumer demand for natural food products, cosmetics and even pharmaceuticals. However, modern society also demands convenience and this offers challenges in product formulation. Mankind will not go back to growing their own crops and spend all day cooking. Mankind wants processed products, but with natural ingredients.

It is a major chance for biomass growers to add value to their crops and for biomass processers to add value to their side streams. We believe that tailor made biorefinery approaches will result in natural ingredients with solid business cases.

What we do

We invented a mild extraction technology that results in the best quality extracts against lower costs. We use our own technology to produce pharmaceuticals, food ingredients and cosmetics. We set up these factories in collaboration with strategic partners.

An extensive Research and Development phase is required before one can progress to commercial production. Every extract-biomass combination requires specific processing conditions that have to be developed and validated first. Based on the product, the partner and the business case, we decide the optimal collaboration route together. This can either be in a license-deal, as contract manufacturer or in joint venture. We do not sell machines.

How we do it

New technologies and approaches are needed to produce the ingredients of the future. Extraction processes play an important role in the production of these ingredients. Current extraction technologies make use of many processing steps, involve intensive processing conditions and use toxic and dangerous solvents. We use our own proprietary mild extraction technology, that is safe, clean and results in the best quality extracts against lower costs.

Phytonext technology is a one-step extraction process that lowers the barrier to step into biorefinery.

Who we are

Phytonext was born out of the Blue Ocean XLerator (BOX) of Wageningen, the Netherlands. Food Technologist Eral Osmanoglou was looking for a safe and clean extraction process for the production of premium food supplements. In his research he met Pharmaceutical Process Engineer Maz Nicola who invented a method that exactly fitted the requirements. Maz and Eral built a pilot plant with support from BOX and developed the company from there.

Phytonext is situated in Wageningen, the Netherlands. There is a team of scientists, engineers and business developers that develop applications for the Phytonext biorefinery platform.
